I have a Dell with Outlook 2010 on it, and I use it extensively to make appointments, send e-mail reminders of appointments, etc. When I need one of my old iWork documents in the future-which I absolutely will-I'll have to convert it to an Office file using the iCloud version of iWork, and manually fix any formatting inconsistencies.I had no problems with my new Macbook Pro and MS Office 2011, until I tried to sync it with Google Calendar and iCal CalDAV. I don't like having multiple applications installed on my computer which do the same thing, because it gets confusing to keep track of which app I'm in, so installing Office would mean uninstalling iWork. Switching to Microsoft Office would be a major change. I used it on Windows years ago, but never the Mac version. And, I've never actually tried Microsoft Office on Mac. However, while Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are fine, I don't absolutely love them or anything. If I absolutely loved the iWork apps, this wouldn't be enough of a reason to switch. docx files, but it isn't perfect, and native support would make my life a bit easier. Pages does a pretty good job of opening and saving. The single biggest reason is actually just compatibility with Microsoft Office documents. However, I'm wondering if I should switch to Microsoft Office. Mavericks is my preferred version of OS X (as a lot of people here will know), and while iWork '09 is not the latest version Mavericks supports, it's the last version before Apple revamped the whole software suite, and early versions of that revamp were not very good. Today, this means I'm using iWork '09 on OS X 10.9 Mavericks. I always figured that if I was going to use Apple's operating system, I should also use the office suite Apple explicitly built for that operating system. If money is really tight you can't afford new, a recent model, USED PC would bring 100% compatibility too.Įver since first switching to OS X in 2010, I've been an iWork user. or older Intel Macs that- through bootcamp- could become a Windows PC. We were able to collect data on particulate matter in North Birmingham and East Birmingham, which also allowed us to compare their particulate matter levels. Our service learning project with Gasp allowed us to become citizen scientists-getting involved with public research and sharing our findings with others. North Birmingham Park (North Birmingham) This data was downloaded as an Excel sheet, and we were able to calculate the average particulate matter reading. The maps show a broad view of the air quality in both locations, but a more precise reading of air quality was taken at every second over the span of 2 hours by the AirBeam. The colors on the maps indicate the air quality: green is good yellow is moderate orange is unhealthy for sensitive groups red is unhealthy. Below are the readings for North Birmingham Park and Ruffner Mountain. We used the AirBeam for two hours each at both locations to gather air quality data. Therefore, our hypothesis was that the air quality in North Birmingham Park (North Birmingham) would be lower than that of Ruffner Mountain (East Birmingham). With our data, we assisted Gasp and also learned about the reality of the air quality of our environment.īased on our knowledge that, historically, North Birmingham has poorer air quality, we wanted to compare it to an area with expected good air quality, such as a more rural area. The AirBeam measures particulate matter, which is tiny particles in the air that are 30 times smaller than hair (4 times smaller than pollen). Gasp provided us with an air monitor, called an AirBeam, which allowed us to conduct mini air quality studies to determine the air quality in different parts of Birmingham. Hello! We are Team Leggo My Eggo 11’s, and through our Environmental Factors of Public Health class at UAB, we had the unique opportunity to work with Gasp on a service learning project. 11/21/2023 0 Comments Silver blue paint colors![]() Its shine can be reduced when sulfur compounds in silver react with air and process black silver sulfides. Over time, only long-necked tortoises would be present in the population. Consequently, long-necked tortoises would be more likely to be reproductively successful and pass the long-necked trait to their offspring. In times of drought when fewer leaves would be available, those that could reach more leaves had a better chance to eat and survive than those that couldn’t reach the food source. These tortoises were “selected” because they could reach more leaves and access more food than those with short necks. Natural selection, also known as “survival of the fittest,” is the process by which organisms that are better adapted to their environment survive and pass those adaptations onto their offspring this leads to evolutionary change.įor example, a population of giant tortoises found in the Galapagos Archipelago was observed by Darwin to have longer necks than those that lived on other islands with dry lowlands. Darwin called this mechanism natural selection. Wallace and Darwin both observed similar patterns in other organisms and they independently developed the same explanation for how and why such changes could take place. For example, seed-eating finches had stronger, thicker beaks for breaking seeds, and insect-eating finches had spear-like beaks for stabbing their prey. Upon further study, he realized that the varied beaks of each finch helped the birds acquire a specific type of food. Darwin imagined that the island species might be species modified from one of the original mainland species. He observed that these finches closely resembled another finch species on the mainland of South America. The species on the islands had a graded series of beak sizes and shapes with very small differences between the most similar. For example, the ground finches inhabiting the Galápagos Islands comprised several species with a unique beak shape (Figure 1). On these islands, Darwin observed species of organisms on different islands that were clearly similar, yet had distinct differences. Darwin’s journey, like Wallace’s later journeys to the Malay Archipelago, included stops at several island chains, the last being the Galápagos Islands west of Ecuador. Wallace traveled to Brazil to collect insects in the Amazon rainforest from 1848 to 1852 and to the Malay Archipelago from 1854 to 1862. Beagle, including stops in South America, Australia, and the southern tip of Africa. From 1831 to 1836, Darwin traveled around the world on H.M.S. Importantly, each naturalist spent time exploring the natural world on expeditions to the tropics. In the mid-nineteenth century, the actual mechanism for evolution was independently conceived of and described by two naturalists: Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. ![]() He postulated that the beak of an ancestral species had adapted over time to equip the finches to acquire different food sources. Darwin observed that beak shape varies among finch species. In this outcome we’ll learn more about his work and how it helped develop the theory of evolution.ĭarwin and Descent with Modification Figure 1. Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life. However, many favored competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. ![]() By the 1870s, the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors and, in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding.ĭarwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. ![]() What you’ll learn to do: Describe the work of Charles Darwin in the Galapagos Islands, especially his discovery of natural selection in finch populationsĬharles Robert Darwin, was an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. 11/21/2023 0 Comments Ultimate air shuttle cvg to lukThe USPS website is the best place to look when you need to find the nearest USPS location. If you drop the weapon or throw it, it dissipates at the end of the turn. The blade sheds bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet. In addition, when you summon this sword you may create a flash of bright light that blinds everyone in a 10-foot radius on a failed Constitution save until the end of their next turn. It deals 2d8 radiant damage on a hit and has the finesse, light, and thrown properties (range 20/60). It counts as a simple melee weapon with which you are proficient. This magic sword lasts until the spell ends. You summon sparks of bright light that merge together to create a sword of solidified radiance in your hand. Last comment - radiant is a useful damage type in some situations especially against undead but shadow blade does psychic damage so the difference in number of creatures resistant to the damage is likely small - radiant and psychic are both pretty decent damage types. A 5th level shadow blade does 4d8 damage - so likely strictly better. However, comparing to the 5th level Holy Weapon spell from XGtE - this spell adds 2d8 radiant damage and makes it a magical weapon - illuminates a larger area but it is regular damage and has a burst damage ability. Giving it the ability to emit sunlight does start to move it into sunblade territory though with the +2, additional damage vs undead and the much larger area of sunlight - the magic item remains better. However, the 5' bright light, 5' dim light just makes it the equivalent of a torch since bright light doesn't do that much on its own except illuminate magical darkness. ![]() It isn't as generally applicable as the advantage in dim light or darkness of the shadow blade but on the other hand, against the appropriate creatures who are sensitive to sunlight, it will be particularly effective. I'd agree with the 5' sunlight suggestion if you want to boost it a bit. |
